TechNewOld: Sanyo Xacti Dual Camera VPC-CA8, VPC-CG10 and VPC-CG100 review

TechNewOld: Sanyo Xacti Dual Camera VPC-CA8, VPC-CG10 and VPC-CG100 review

These Sanyo Xacti dual cam pistol grip cameras are still great cameras despite getting on now for over a decade.

This video looks at three Sanyo Xacti models from 2008 to 2010:
VPC-CA8: released 2008, waterproof, photo 8mgpx, video 640-480 60fs
- CNET full specification link: https://www.cnet.com/products/sanyo-xacti-vpc-ca8-camcorder-storage-flash-card/
VPC-CG10: released 2009, photo 10mgpx, video full HD 1280-720 30fs
- CNET full specification link: https://www.cnet.com/products/sanyo-xacti-vpc-cg10/specs/
VPC-CG100: released 2010, photo 14mgpx, video full HD 1920-1080 60fs

Sanyo was taken over by Panasonic in 2012 and the brand was dropped. However, Panasonic did use the excellent Xacti pistol grip design and technology in its own rebranded and improved versions: HX-DC and the water proof HX-WA range. More on Sanyo history can be found at Wikipedia (link below).

I like these cameras. Ok the newer Panasonic range HX-DC/WA (see listing below for models) offer better long term value and are more capable. However, if you do have or come by one of these later models of Sanyo Xacti I would not hesitate in using them. I also feel that I may have been a little harsh on the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CA8 as I have since found some video footage I took using the camera whilst on holiday in the Netherlands whilst visiting the Eftling theme park: it was pouring and we got soaked on one of the water rides, the VPC-CA8 handled the situation very well and took some good video (640-480 60fs) in poor light and of course was not bothered by the rain/water and thus capturing good family memories. However, I maintain my Sanyo Xacti order of preference:
1st VPC-CG100
2nd VPC-CG10
3rd VPC-CA8

Panasonic (using Sanyo Xacti design and technology) Dual Cameras that are worth looking at:
HX-DC1: 14mgpx Full HD video
HX-DC2: 14mgpx, Full HD video + Panoramic + intelligent Auto
HX-DC3: 16mgpx, Full HD video + Panoramic + intelligent Auto + creative control
HX-WA2: same as DC2 + waterproof
HX-WA3: same as DC3 + waterproof
HX-WA20: 16mgpx + essentially same as WA2
HX-WA30: same as WA20 + wifi + menu button near thumb control + manual shutter speed control
Video Creation : Interesting video, have several camcorders sanyo and Panasonic ,Sony and so on .Sanyo made great cams especially the sanyo xacti camcorder vpc-th1 progressive scan 1080p later model of the th1 that records in 60fps at full 1080p now very rare to find as most are only 720p .Really good for slow motion
ezpainting : Hi, thanks for the video. I recently got myself CG100 model and the battery not working. Was wondering what is the highest capacity of the battery CG100 can use? Currently the battery that came along is 3.7v 980mha, is there any higher out there in the market? Thanks in advance.
NobleD TechNewOld : Some really good feedback from a real connoisseur! I have shifted to the Panasonics and still do like to shoot with them, but you have to carry some extra batteries. I once has a vpc-hd2000, that was an interesting beast: also had a mic slot so useful for filming videos and getting spoken audio, but I found the image to be a bit soft and focus poor.
David Noble : Hi, I would not know specifically for this camera, but as longs as you buy the correct battery if you can find one with higher mha you should be Ok. My experience with the newer Panasonic HX-WA30 (which at its core is still a Sanyo) was able to take higher capacity after market batteries than what was shipped with it originally. I have to say I think it will be hard to find bigger than 980mha ! The rule with these cameras is to have 2-3 charged up spares always on hand.
NobleD TechNewOld : how did you get on?
